Research Symposium on Corporate Governance
in China and India:
Sponsored by
Wiley-Blackwell Publishers and Old Dominion University
October 24-25, 2008
Virginia Beach, Virginia
China and India are rapidly ascending as economic powers and are playing important
roles in international trade and investment.  Increasingly, international investors are
entering these markets, and Chinese and India firms are raising capital globally.  As
these countries’ interactions with the global economy increase, knowledge of corporate
governance in China and India is becoming more critical for business executives, policy
makers, and academic researchers.

Wiley-Blackwell and Old Dominion University are organizing this symposium to encourage
research on corporate governance issues relating to China and India.  We invite authors
to submit papers about corporate governance for firms operating in China and India,
comparative governance studies of the two countries, or governance for firms based in
one or both of these two countries that focus on various aspects of the following
suggested topics:

  • Governance Environment: Formal (e.g., legal framework) and informal (e.g.,
cultural) institutions that affect firm operations
  • Ownership Structure: Family-controlled, cross-shareholding, and shareholder’s
    rights and protections
  • Role of Stakeholders in Corporate Governance: Relationship between
government, society, international investors, and business
  • Disclosure and Transparency: Accounting standards, information quality and
dissemination, and market pressure for good corporate governance
  • Responsibilities of the Board: Roles, composition, independence, and impact
  • CEO and top management team: Roles, compensation, succession, and appraisal.

The Symposium will feature keynote speeches by Anil Gupta on Indian Corporate
governance (
www.anilkgupta.com) and Minxin Pei (www.carnegieendowment.org/experts)
on Chinese corporate governance, research paper presentations from scholars all over
the world, and round-table discussions with business practitioners. All papers submitted
to the symposium will be double-blind reviewed for acceptance.  The best papers from
the symposium will be considered for publication in a special issue of Corporate
Governance: An International Review (CGIR) located at
www.blackwellpublishing.
com/journal.asp?ref=0964-8410&site=1

We especially welcome manuscripts that are (1) theoretically and methodologically
rigorous and innovative, and (2) provide insights that are useful to executives, directors,
and/or public policy makers engaged in corporate governance matters.

Please read the author guidelines before submitting your paper.  Papers that do not
adhere to the house style guidelines will be returned to authors for changes.  Please

in China and India.  Symposium details may be found at

paper or proposal is accepted, at least one contributing author must attend the
symposium to present the research.
In addition, we will not send your paper
out for review until one contributing author has registered for the
conference.
