Keynote speaker on India: Anil Gupta

Anil K. Gupta is the Ralph J. Tyser Professor of Strategy and
Organization, Research Director-Dingman Center for
Entrepreneurship, and Research Director-Center for
International Business Education & Research at the Robert
H. Smith School of Business, The University of Maryland-
College Park. During 2000-01, he also served as a Visiting
Professor at Stanford University. He earned a Doctor of
Business Administration from the Harvard Business School,
an M.B.A. from the Indian Institute of Management at
Ahmedabad, and a B.Tech. from the Indian Institute of
Technology at Kanpur.

Professor Gupta specializes in the field of strategy,
globalization, innovation & entrepreneurship, and
organization design. He has published over 60 papers
including several in major journals such as Academy of
Management Journal, Academy of Management Review,
Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, Sloan
Management Review, Journal of Business Strategy,
Academy of Management Executive, Human Resource
Management, Human Resource Planning, Accounting,
Organizations, and Society, Business Horizons, Journal of
Business Venturing, and Frontiers of Entrepreneurship
Research. He serves or has served on the editorial boards
(including as Guest Co-Editor) of Academy of Management
Journal, Academy of Management Review, Organization
Science, Information Systems Research, Journal of
International Business Studies, European Business Forum,
and other journals.

In 2000, Professor Gupta was inducted into the Academy of
Management Journals’ Hall of Fame. In 1997-1998, he
received the campus-wide Distinguished Scholar-Teacher
Award from The University of Maryland at College Park. In
1997, one of his papers was recognized as “one of the ten
most-often cited articles” in the entire 40-year history of the
prestigious Academy of Management Journal. In 1994, he
was ranked by Management International Review as one of
the “Top 20 North American Superstars” for research in
strategy and organization. In addition to the above,
Professor Gupta has also received other awards including
the 2005 Best Paper-Runner Up Award from the Academy of
International Business, the 1991 Glueck Best Paper Award in
Business Policy and Strategy from the Academy of
Management, the 1989 and 1998 Allen Krowe Awards for
Excellence in Teaching from The University of Maryland, and
the 1984 Broderick Prize for Excellence in Research from
Boston University.

Professor Gupta is currently writing a new book titled The
Battle for China and India (coauthored with Haiyan Wang;
expected publication in 2008). He is the coauthor or coeditor
of three books: Smart Globalization (Jossey-Bass, 2003),
Global Strategy and Organization (John Wiley, 2003), and
The Quest for Global Dominance: Transforming Global
Presence into Global Competitive Advantage (Jossey-Bass,
2001). He has been recognized by Business Week as an
Outstanding Professor in its Guide to the Best B-Schools. He
has also worked as a consultant with several corporations
including National Semiconductor, IBM, Marriott, First Data
Corporation, Monsanto, ABB, Lockheed Martin, McCormick,
Norrell Services, TeliaSonera, Metso, UPM-Kymmene,
Raisio, Finnair, Cemex, Penoles, and IRI Group, Italy. He is
an elected member of the board of directors of NeoMagic
Corporation (NASDAQ, a semiconductor company) and TiE-
DC, the premier organization of entrepreneurs and venture
capitalists dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship in the Mid-
Atlantic region. He has earlier served on the boards of
directors of Omega Worldwide (NASDAQ, an asset
management company) and Vitalink Pharmaceutical
Services Inc. (NYSE). He is also a member of the board of
advisors for Asia Silicon Valley Connection (San Mateo, CA),
RavGen (a Maryland-based biotechnology venture), Zolon
Tech (a Virginia-based software and services venture), and
VennWorks (a New York based creator of new technology
companies).

Besides Stanford University, Professor Gupta has also
served as a visiting professor at the Tuck School at
Dartmouth College, Bocconi Business School (Milan, Italy),
Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration
(Finland), and IPMI (Jakarta, Indonesia) and has been
quoted by The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post,
USA Today, Red Herring, ComputerWorld, CIO Magazine,
Geomarkets.com as well as the leading business journals in
Finland, Italy, India, and China. During January-February
1998, Financial Times published four of Professor Gupta’s
papers in a series on “Mastering Global Business.” He is
also listed in “Who’s Who in America” and has served as an
advisor to the US-India Business Council.
